Diversity of Housing
The richness of a neighborhood is determined by the number of different types of people from all different backgrounds that call your neighborhood home. Our community consists of many different kinds of people from many different socio-economic backgrounds. Like all great neighborhoods, we want to remain a neighborhood for all kinds of people.
Pushing for housing that is affordable to singles, seniors, and especially, to families, is crucial to the success of our neighborhood. As housing prices and property values went up, we started to lose some of the diversity that has been the backbone of Northcenter. Many could no longer afford to live in the area where they grew up or worked. We want Northcenter to remain a neighborhood rich in its people, so that those with great financial means want to stay, and those with less financial cushion can remain here.
To maintain stability, to promote ownership in our neighborhood, and to remain a community welcome to people of all socio-economic backgrounds, it is essential to work for diversity in housing.

TIF 101
Northcenter is a Tax Increment Finance (TIF) district. But what exactly is a TIF and why should you care? Download the TIF 101 fact sheet to learn more about how TIFs work and what they mean to Northcenter.
Why is this important to Northcenter Neighborhood Association? Because we have a large TIF area in our neighborhood. Running down Irving Park, up Western and down all along the river, this TIF area represents a huge part of our neighborhood. What is going to be developed here changes our neighborhood. This is the map of the Western Avenue South TIF.
